Our working culture at OXYGEN (ignition energy + purpose)
We're not going to make it if we don't work 7 days a week, 10+ hours a day.
That's just the culture at OXYGEN right now.
Harry Stebbings gets backlash for calling out European summer-chill culture, while in Silicon Valley and China our competitors are outcompeting us.
I'm not here to promote hustle culture. This way of living isn't something you can sustainably keep up for years, but the early days of a startup just need this ignition energy.
It's like a rocket reaching orbit. The hard part isn't getting off the ground, it's getting fast enough to stay up. That's what burns almost all the fuel. After that it coasts on almost nothing.
I think especially my generation, Gen Z, has to normalise long working hours again.
We as a generation are so selfishly discussing work-life balance, trying to maximise personal pleasure to have more time to doomscroll on social media instead of creating value.
I think the core problem is that there is a lack of purpose.
The worst days are when my brain is so cooked that my girlfriend forces me to take a day off to recover.
I know so many people around me who happily work 7 days a week, because they love what they do (or at least get meaning from the value they provide to the world).
As an ending note:
- I'm aware that rest is important for the quality of your work - Work for the sake of work is a waste of time - Hustle culture and burnout is real
But I think there is too much focus on selfish lifestyle optimisation instead of generating value.
